Meeting 100-Year Detention Requirements

An underground pipe and bioretention system managed stormwater and satisfied water quality requirements.

At a new mixed-use development in Aurora, Colorado, an Aluminized corrugated metal pipe (CMP) detention system was paired with a Filterra^® Bioscape^® high-rate bioretention system to provide a stormwater solution. The system met stringent stormwater detention and water quality requirements within a reduced footprint.

Building Bridges

Replacing a Deficient Bridge Along a Historically Significant Corridor

A six-cell precast concrete bridge carried a major roadway over a creek and railroad.

When a structure originally constructed in 1925 along State Route 3101 was deemed structurally deficient, it was replaced with a BEBO^® E84T Bridge Concrete Arch System. The aesthetics of the new structure preserved the historic character of the original bridge and the connection between Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Replacing an Undersized Culvert to Avoid Road Overtopping

A pipe and headwall system provided a replacement upgrade to a damaged culvert.

After a culvert on East Hill Road in Middlesex, Vermont was severely damaged during a flood event, it was replaced with an Aluminized Type 2 (ALT2) HEL-COR^® pipe. To further enhance performance, a CHS^® (Culvert Headwall System) was incorporated to optimize hydraulic efficiency.

Controlling Erosion on Highways

Hard armor mats were installed to protect the highway embankment from future flood events.

Given the proximity of the Minnesota River and the low elevation of Trunk Highway 19 (TH 19) near Henderson, Minnesota, ArmorFlex^® Class 40 Mats were installed to prevent embankment erosion and a potential loss of roadway during overtopping caused by storm events.

	Competition Is A Beautiful Thing...

	We all know that is true, but a reminder never hurts. I’ve worked for decades with a variety of construction product manufacturers and only realized in recent years the true value of expanding competition. Historically, companies worked to get an advantage in specifications with minor inclusions (I remember one being the color of the stripe on the pipe as being critical!). Proactively working to consider and include every legitimate product in designs and specifications, however, has proven to be the best path.
