CDS Hydrodynamic Separator Meets State Stormwater Requirements
In 2015, the California State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) adopted statewide Trash Provisions to address the impacts of trash on the state's surface waters. At this location, engineers specified a CDS® Hydrodynamic Separator with a Custom Diversion Structure that uses continuous deflective separation – a combination of swirl concentration and indirect screening to screen, separate and trap debris, sediment, and hydrocarbons from stormwater runoff.
When the creek crossing structure originally constructed in 1898 was deemed structurally deficient, it was replaced with a BEBO® Bridge Concrete Arch System for its ability to provide a clear span and mimic the look of the historic bridge.
After the existing, inadequately sized culverts along a county road reached their design life, it was determined that aluminized ULTRA FLO® culverts were the best replacement option to prevent overtopping during rain events.
As a Gen-Xer, I am old enough to remember a time without cellphones when getting connected with someone on the telephone literally meant being confined to a corded phone. Sometimes this was not very enjoyable - like trying to have a conversation with your crush on the kitchen wall phone (it had the longest cord) without mom trying to listen in or travelling in an unfamiliar area desperately searching for a working payphone. Thankfully, things have improved, and landlines have been replaced with amazing wireless technology. That said, over the years things have also progressed in the world of storm and wastewater pipe – now larger diameter conveyance systems can also benefit from updated technology to have a better connection. However, once this connection is made, it should last longer than a conversation with your sweetheart.
At first glance, it's easy to get excited over how much innovation has occurred in the field of stormwater management in recent years. A wide variety of new stormwater control measures (SCMs) have been developed and deployed for use while we simultaneously worked to refine our design standards for our tried and true practices to improve their functionality. Concurrently, we have continued to update our best practices and protocols for SCM performance testing and monitoring to ensure these new tools and approaches can meet relevant pollutant removal goals. The good news is that our stormwater toolbox is filled with an expanding list of options backed by increasingly robust performance data, so we can now protect receiving waters from the negative impacts of urban runoff in more ways than ever before. However, a worrisome trend seems to be emerging among a subset of newer SCMs: limited access or a complete lack of maintainability.

CSP for Vertical Applications: Understanding Design, Applications and Practices
Corrugated steel pipe (CSP) and structural plate products have been produced since the early 1900s and have since been expanded to a variety of applications. CSP and structural plate products are designed with a profile wall to provide a more efficient strength-to-material ratio. This strength, paired with its durability and dependability, has allowed it to be a versatile product since its inception.
Understanding the opportunities and challenges that may lie ahead can help shape what the future might look like. Monica Morales, water resources engineer at Jacobs and a star of ASCE's #CitiesOfTheFuture film, discusses how engineers can become future-ready.
