During a $48 million redevelopment project at Michigan State University, a Continental® Pedestrian Truss structure was installed as the best solution for a permanent, safer pedestrian crossing on West Farm Lane.
Ever since a deteriorating crossing structure was demolished in 2018, users of the disc golf course have been unable to access part of the course. The installation of a Connector®-style Continental® Pedestrian Truss restored access.
Corrugated metal pipe (CMP) was installed underground at a RaceTrac gas station in order to manage and detain stormwater for its ability to maximize land use.
In order to provide an efficient and controlled flow of water through the canal, a unique control structure was created from CORLIX® corrugated aluminum pipe combined with a prefabricated aluminum headwall and factory-attached flap gates to control the flow through the canal.
Why Aluminized is Better Than Galvanized for Culvert Service Life
Metallic coatings have been applied to iron and steel armaments as early as the 17th century. The purpose of metallic coatings applied to steel is to help retard corrosion. The zinc coating process of steel, referred to as galvanizing, was named after Luigi Galvani, an Italian physicist who lived in the 18th century. Galvanized steel in the construction industry came into widespread use in the early 20th century. Today there are two prominent metallic coatings for corrugated steel pipe, zinc coated (galvanized) meeting AASHTO M218 and aluminum coated (aluminized) meeting AASHTO M274. Galvanized corrugated steel pipe was first installed in the US in 1904, and aluminized was first installed in 1952. Both galvanized and aluminized coatings require a scale barrier formation to protect steel.

On the rare occasion I get invited to a party, I like preparing topical jokes, funny anecdotes, and ways of explaining my job as a stormwater engineer that won’t instantly put the other guests to sleep. So when someone asks what I do, I usually pique their curiosity by answering, “I make the world a cleaner place, one storm at a time.” This usually gets a follow-up question about what that means or a confused look and a request to tell another joke about pineapples. Sadly, I only know one good pineapple joke, so I tell them that I create stormwater storage and treatment systems that capture pollution from storm events before they flow into our lakes, rivers, and oceans. It’s my way of creating a cleaner environment for everyone to enjoy, one storm at a time.
