Corrugated Aluminum Pipe Culvert Performance in Saltwater Environments

Corrugated Aluminum Pipe Culvert Performance in Saltwater Environments

Corrugated Aluminum Alloy Pipe (CAP) has superior corrosion resistance and excellent abrasion resistance, which allows it to be installed in a much wider environmental range than traditional galvanized corrugated metal pipe. The rugged 3004-aluminum alloy core is clad on both sides with a 7072-aluminum alloy, which provides an anodic protection to the core alloy. The cladding shields the core alloy both physically and electrochemically against corrosion. This is primarily due to a thin, tenacious, inert oxide barrier that forms on the metal surface when exposed to oxygen. The oxide barrier appears on the pipe surface as a grayish-white coating that will build up over time. CAP performs very well in salt and brackish water applications.

Will it Float? Understanding Stormwater Detention Buoyancy Calculations

Will it Float? Understanding Stormwater Detention Buoyancy Calculations

One of my favorite summer activities is floating in the water and looking up at the sky. For some, like me, floating can be relaxing, but for others, floating brings an uneasiness. When floating, one must trust the physical force at play – a force known as buoyancy. When trying to float in the ocean, buoyancy is a good thing. In the case of an underground detention system design, buoyancy is a design consideration that is particularly of concern when groundwater is present. Buoyancy is the tendency of a fluid to exert a supporting upward force on an object partially or entirely submerged in a fluid. A buoyant force on an object is equal to the weight of the displaced fluid. In simple terms, the water keeping me afloat exerts a force equal to the amount of water my body displaces.

Underground stormwater storage is the preferred solution to maximize the land value for the owner. However, these systems take valuable time for engineers to design and many of these systems rely on stone void storage that, over time, can be contaminated with solids.  Please join Robert Chapman from Contech as he addresses both of these issues by introducing Contech's new Void Saver Stormwater Detention System and our new Design Your Own Detention System Tool.
